Effective Methods for Engaging Student Learners in the Engineering Classroom – face-to-face and online

Description: The learning community will gather and discuss effective methods for engaging student learners in the Engineering classroom – both face-to-face and online to foster student’s knowledge.
Times and Locations: We will be meeting from 12:30 to 1:30 pm on Fridays as listed below in room 414 in Nedderman Hall.
Feb 3rd – session 1
Feb 17th – session 2

SESSION 1 – Intro to CIRTL / Ask participants about the issues or difficult that they have faced in the classroom or in online – that could be the topic 1
Outcomes:
- Describe and recognize the value of learning communities, and how they impact on student learning.
- Describe several techniques and issues of establishing LCs comprising a diverse group of learners.
- Describe the scope of diversity in learning environment, of both students and instructor
SESSION 2 – What is a learning community? Pros and Cons.
Outcomes:
- Describe and recognize the value of learning communities, and how they impact on student learning.
- Describe several techniques and issues of establishing LCs comprising a diverse group of learners.
- Recognize the value of and participate in local professionally-focused learning communities associated with teaching and learning.
SESSION 3 – How to create engagement in distance learning students and in-class students
Outcomes:
- Describe and recognize the value of learning communities, and how they impact on student learning.
- Describe several known high-impact, evidence-based effective instructional practices and materials and recognize their alignment with particular types of learning goals.
SESSION 4 – Group projects vs. individual project (pros and cons)
Outcomes:
- Describe several assessment techniques and recognize their alignment with particular types of learning goals.
SESSION 5 – Debate — educational tools (e-tools, internet, user-center games, gaming software etc.)
Outcomes:
- Describe several known high-impact, evidence-based effective instructional practices and materials and recognize their alignment with particular types of learning goals.
SESSION 6 – Topic decided by students (option – Teaching-as-research)
